Field of Boaz

The Field of Boaz is located in the east of the town of Beit Sahour in Palestine, nestled in a fertile plain that leads the way down to the Dead Sea. It is increasingly boxed in by buildings in a shallow valley that is found north of Shepherd's Field Greek Orthodox Church.

As the Book of Ruth states, Ruth was the daughter-in-law of Naomi, who was a woman from Bethlehem who went with her husband and two sons to the land of Moab east of the Dead Sea to flee famine. Naomi's husband passed away, and her sons married Moabite women. Both of sons died about 10 years later. Ruth is remembered as one of the most celebrated people and pictures of devotion in the Old Testament, and this is linked to the Field of Boaz near Bethlehem.

Ruth's devotion that she was known for was rewarded when she and her mother-in-law Naomi went to Moab. They went to the fields to pick through the barley that the different reapers had left behind for those who were poor, something that was known as gleaning. It was there she met a rich landowner who went by the name Boaz, who showed Ruth kindness since she was loyal to Naomi. Eventually, Boaz and Ruth got married and were the parents of Obed. Because of the Biblical importance of this location, the Field of Boaz is an important site in Christianity.
